serving others

Jesus trained His disciples and then put them to work. Christianity is not a “sit and soak” experience but a “go and do” lifestyle. People need to be serving and giving of themselves as Jesus did for others. Jesus came to serve, not to be served (Matthew 20:28), and if we want to follow Jesus, as he calls us to, than we likewise should seek to serve others as well.

Serving makes us more like Jesus and helps us to reach our full potential in Jesus. But this idea of serving others and not ourselves is contrary to what most of our world believes. In our world we are taught that you must take care of the most important person first (yourself). If we have our lives in order, if we have the right friends, if we marry the right person, if we have the right job, if we drive the right car, and live in the right neighborhood, than we will be accepted.

Why we serve

But the gospel teaches us that we get our acceptance, love, and joy from God’s unconditional love, as it was demonstrated for us on the cross. When we see and understand that we get all that we need in Christ—that is when we are full in Christ—than we are able to give our time, money, and life away for the good of others. When we are full in Christ, we can serve others in the same way that Jesus served us. And when we serve others we move closer to reaching the full potential that we can have in Jesus.

When we serve we need to constantly remind ourselves that we are not getting our fullness and acceptance from serving, but it is because we are full in Christ that we can pour our life out for others on Sunday and throughout the week. Service in the church, out in the community, and beyond our neighborhoods is essential. Believers should serve and grow in service by discovering and developing their gifts and their skills and figuring out how they can use what God has given them to serve others.
